New York does not slow down when the temperature drops. In December, Midtown is at its brightest; by January and February, the holiday rush gives way to major performances, winter offers and a little more space to explore.

The New Yorker Hotel makes a useful base for both sides of the season. From sparkling storefronts and outdoor skating to seasonal performances and evenings beneath the city lights, winter gives Midtown a different kind of energy.

The New Yorker places you close to the festivities, with a warm, comfortable room and inviting on-site dining waiting whenever you are ready to step out of the cold.

What Is Winter Like in New York City?

December through February can bring freezing temperatures, strong wind, rain, snow and icy pavements, sometimes within the same trip. Pack warm layers, a waterproof outer layer and shoes with reliable grip. Check the forecast each morning and group plans by neighborhood so you are not repeatedly crossing the city in the cold.

December is best for lights and seasonal performances. January and February bring a quieter pace, cultural events and the return of NYC Winter Outing, when participating restaurants, Broadway productions, attractions and hotels offer seasonal deals. The 2027 program is due to go live in January, so check the official listings when booking a post-holiday stay.

See the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree deserves more than a passing mention in a list of holiday displays. Its thousands of lights, towering scale and position above the skating rink create one of the defining scenes of winter in Manhattan.

Rockefeller Center is approximately a 25-minute walk from The New Yorker. For a calmer view, go on a weekday morning, when you can see the tree and rink before the biggest evening crowds arrive. If the lights are the priority, visit later at night and approach along Sixth Avenue for the full view into the plaza.

Official 2026 lighting dates and visiting hours had not yet been released at the time of writing, so confirm them before your trip.

Winter Events to Plan Around

The season has more to offer than a standard circuit of shop windows and observation decks. These confirmed events give you a reason to choose particular travel dates.

Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes

Dates: November 4, 2026–January 4, 2027
Location: Radio City Music Hall, 1260 Sixth Avenue
From the hotel: Approximately 20–25 minutes on foot

The Christmas Spectacular returns with a record 230 performances and ten Rockettes numbers. Multiple showtimes on many dates make it easier to build the performance around dinner rather than losing an entire day to one event. Reserve ahead for December weekends and the days closest to Christmas.

CBS Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden

Date: December 19, 2026; start time to be announced
Location: Madison Square Garden
From the hotel: Across Eighth Avenue

College basketball takes over The Garden for a doubleheader featuring Kansas vs. Ohio State and North Carolina vs. Kentucky. This is an easy centerpiece for a pre-Christmas weekend, particularly for guests arriving through Penn Station.

Fifth Avenue Open Streets

Date: December 13, 2026
Location: Fifth Avenue, Midtown
From the hotel: Begin around a 15-minute walk away and continue north

Seven blocks of Fifth Avenue become a pedestrian-only holiday promenade with live entertainment, food, shopping experiences and seasonal installations. Go in daylight if you want more room to explore, then stay into the early evening as the lights become more prominent.

The Winter Show

Dates: January 22–31, 2027
Location: Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue
From the hotel: Approximately 20–25 minutes by subway, depending on connections

The Winter Show brings art, antiques and design spanning 5,000 years to the Park Avenue Armory. It offers a strong indoor anchor for a January trip and a more distinctive alternative to default sightseeing when the weather turns.

Event details can change. Check the organizer’s official page before booking tickets or finalizing your itinerary.

Skate and Browse at Bryant Park Winter Village

Bryant Park is around a 15-minute walk from the hotel, making it the easiest major outdoor winter stop to pair with a Midtown stay. The Winter Village is due to return in fall 2026, with its skating rink, seasonal food and holiday shops.

Reserve a skating time before you go and visit on a weekday morning if you prefer a less crowded rink. In January and February, the park remains useful even after the main holiday-shopping period: skate, stop for a warm drink and continue to the New York Public Library next door rather than building a day around multiple outdoor journeys.

Where to Eat After a Winter Day in Manhattan

The best winter dining option depends on when you return and what kind of evening you want. At The New Yorker, the three venues serve different moments rather than repeating the same experience.

Tick Tock Diner is open 24 hours and serves all-day breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches and classic American comfort food. It is an easy choice before an early sightseeing trip or after a late Broadway show.

For dinner, Trattoria Bianca offers Italian dishes and fine wines in a relaxed setting. Or, if you’re feeling fancy, Butcher & Banker serves a distinctive steakhouse menu inside the hotel’s historic former bank vault.
